Climate change

The long-term warming of the planet caused by greenhouse gases released by human activity, and the shifts in weather patterns that follow.

Carbon dioxide, methane and other gases let sunlight through and absorb some of the heat the Earth radiates back, keeping it in the system. Burning coal, oil and gas releases carbon that was locked underground for hundreds of millions of years, and concentrations in the atmosphere are now well above anything in the long ice-core record. The measured result is a rise in average global temperature, with warming faster over land and in the Arctic.

What follows is less about everywhere being pleasantly warmer and more about disruption: sea level rise from melting ice and expanding water, heavier downpours in some places and longer dry spells in others, hotter heatwaves, and shifts in where crops and species can live. For India the questions that matter most are the monsoon's reliability, heat stress in cities, Himalayan glaciers that feed the big rivers, and the coasts.

Worth knowing

  • Weather and climate again: a cold winter somewhere does not contradict a warming average.
  • Carbon dioxide released today affects the atmosphere for a very long time, which is why delay matters.
  • Adaptation and reducing emissions are both needed โ€” neither on its own is an answer.
