The same child needs different things at 4, at 9 and at 15. Below, each stage in three voices: what the student can do, what the teacher can do, what the parent can do.

01Pre-primary (Nursery – Sr. KG)

The technique of studies at this age is simply a will to love learning. Everything else follows.

Student

Rhymes, music, drawing and cartoons are the study. Scribbling becomes writing; play becomes speaking. Screen time only with a parent, and short.

Teacher

Answer every little question "in a splendid fashion". Teach in friendliness and sequence. Passion and compassion; never a stick. Eagerness — "keenness" — is caught, not taught.

Parent

A mistake is a mistake, not a crime — explain, "kiss and make up". Talk in wisdom; unanswered questions make an anxious child. Make reading a habit at bedtime. A home of humility, honesty and no violence.

What the research addsBetween 0 and 6 the brain forms up to a million new connections a second. The strongest predictor of later reading is the number of words a child hears in conversation — not flashcards, not apps. Talk, sing, read aloud, ask "what do you think?"

02Primary (Std I – VII)

"Education makes you rich — in capacity and capability." The primary years build the foundations every later subject rests on: reading fluency, tables, handwriting, curiosity.

Student

Books + play + sport every day. General knowledge from TV documentaries and comics. Daydream less, ask more. Homework the same day.

Teacher

Politeness first. No bullying tolerated — "a bully is an illness of the class". Patience to re-teach; turn boredom into a game. Every child gets a chance to answer.

Parent

Cooperate with teachers; be "a dictionary" for the child; be the teacher at home for 20 minutes a day. Modesty and honesty modelled, not preached. Good marks come from rework at home, calmly.

03Secondary (Std VIII – XII)

Now studies connect to a career and a life. The task is to train the mind to love studying — through quality notes, recitation from memory, and a purpose the student chooses.

Student

Study periodically for a career, not just an exam. Quality notes; recite aloud from memory (it builds memory and confidence together). "Time-pass brings miseries" — protect the hours.

Teacher

Sound knowledge motivates — "digest it, then teach it". Be fair with every student. Be the guru; be firm when needed; never humiliate.

Parent

Monitor homework without doing it. Strict on discipline, but talk like friends about your own school days. Attend every parents' meeting and workshop with the child. Pray together — a family devotion is a family anchor.

The hardest years for parentsTeenagers pull away; it is biology, not rejection. Keep the door open: eat dinner together, ask about friends before marks, notice sleep and mood. A teen who can talk to a parent about a bad result will talk to them about bigger things.

04Parenting skills for studying

Kind words energiseThe child who is told "you can" at home tries at school. The one told "you never" stops trying. Words become the inner voice.
Read and tell storiesStory-telling builds vocabulary, memory, imagination and the parent-child bond in one activity. Comics count — "thinking skills in comics reading".
Teach in the mother tongue when stuckTranslate a hard concept into Marathi/Hindi/Bengali "in a sweetness of mind". Understanding first, English words second.
See homework done, not do itSit nearby with your own work. Check at the end. Ask "how did you get this?" rather than "wrong".
Knowledge at homeA dictionary, a GK book, an atlas, a bookshelf, documentaries. A house with books produces readers.
Revision together"Rework the melodious studies" — 10 minutes of asking questions from the day's lesson at dinner is spaced repetition, free.
Sleep, food, playThe three things a parent controls that matter more than any tuition class.

06The values of a student — an oath
