Psychology is the science of behaviour and the mind. For a student it is also the most practical subject there is โ€” because the mind is the tool you study with.

01Conscious and subconscious

The iceberg model. Conscious thought is a small, slow, logical part; the subconscious runs habits, skills, emotions and long-term memory without asking you.

Advanced: habits and the basal gangliaNeuroscientists at MIT found that as a routine becomes a habit, brain activity shifts from the prefrontal cortex (effortful) to the basal ganglia (automatic). The cue โ†’ routine โ†’ reward loop (Charles Duhigg, *The Power of Habit*) explains why a fixed study cue (same desk, same time, same first task) matters more than willpower: you are handing the job to the automatic brain.

02Take the Psychological Assessment

A 12-minute wellbeing & study-mind profileMotivation, focus, pressure, sleep, confidence and belonging, compared with what is typical for your grade, with pointers to help โ€” start the Psychological Assessment.

03What motivates us: Maslow

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs (1943). Lower needs demand attention first โ€” a hungry, sleepless or frightened child cannot focus on learning.
Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs (1943). Lower needs demand attention first โ€” a hungry, sleepless or frightened child cannot focus on learning.

For students and parents this explains a lot: a child who is bullied (safety), lonely (belonging) or constantly criticised (esteem) will underperform however clever. Fix the lower levels and the top level โ€” curiosity, creativity, mastery โ€” appears on its own.

04IQ, EQ and the many intelligences

๐Ÿงฎ

IQ

Measures reasoning, memory and speed. Average is 100; most people are between 85 and 115. It can be raised (see Thinking Skills).

๐Ÿ’›

EQ

Knowing and managing feelings โ€” yours and others'. Predicts leadership, relationships and resilience better than IQ.

๐ŸŽจ

Multiple intelligences

Howard Gardner: linguistic, logical, spatial, musical, bodily, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist. Schools test two; life uses all eight.

05Sigmund Freud and the unconscious

Freud (1856โ€“1939), the "father of psychoanalysis", proposed that much of what we do is driven by wishes and memories we are not aware of, and that dreams are a window into them. Modern psychology keeps some of his ideas (the unconscious, defence mechanisms, the importance of childhood) and has replaced others with evidence-based methods such as CBT.

06Mind tools every student can use

Cognitive reframing"I failed the test" โ†’ "I found the four topics I need to fix." Same fact, different sentence, different next action.
VisualisationAthletes rehearse the race in the mind; students can rehearse walking into the hall calmly, reading the paper, starting with the easy question. The brain treats vivid imagining as practice.
Implementation intentions"If it is 6.30 pm, then I open my maths book at the study table." If-then plans double follow-through in research studies.
Gratitude at nightThree good things from the day, written. Two weeks of this raises measured wellbeing and sleep quality.
Intuition, checkedA gut feeling is fast pattern-matching by the subconscious โ€” often right about people, often wrong about probability. Use it, then verify.

If you are strugglingFeeling low, anxious or hopeless for more than two weeks is not weakness and not "just exam stress". Talk to a parent, a teacher, or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24ร—7, Government of India) or iCall 9152987821. Asking for help is the most intelligent thing a mind can do.
