Weather and climate

Weather is what the sky is doing today. Climate is what it usually does over decades. Confusing them is the commonest mistake in the whole subject.

The monsoon in an Indian city

Weather is the state of the atmosphere now โ€” temperature, humidity, wind, cloud, rain โ€” and it changes hour by hour. Climate is the long-run pattern of weather for a place, measured over thirty years or more. A cold week says nothing about climate, in the same way that one low score says nothing about a batsman's average.

India's climate is dominated by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of winds caused by land heating faster than sea in summer. Moist air is drawn in from the ocean and drops its water over the subcontinent; in winter the pattern reverses. Something like three quarters of India's annual rainfall arrives in those few months, which is why the date the monsoon arrives is front-page news and why so much depends on it.

Worth knowing

  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya are among the wettest inhabited places on Earth.
  • The Western Ghats force the monsoon winds upward, which is why the windward side is lush and the leeward side dry.
  • El Niรฑo and La Niรฑa, patterns in the Pacific, shift Indian monsoon rainfall from year to year.
