The variety of living things — within a species, between species, and across whole ecosystems. Variety is what makes a system able to absorb a shock.
A forest of one tree species and a forest of two hundred both look green, but they do not behave alike. The diverse one survives a disease, a drought or a pest that the other does not, because something in it copes. The same logic applies within a species: a crop grown from a single variety across a whole region is one new pathogen away from disaster, which has happened more than once in agricultural history.
India is one of the world's megadiverse countries, with the Western Ghats and the Eastern Himalaya among the richest places on Earth for species found nowhere else. The pressures are habitat loss, hunting, pollution, introduced species and a changing climate — and habitat loss is overwhelmingly the largest of them.
