Archaeology

Reconstructing the past from what people left behind โ€” mostly rubbish, buildings and bones, rarely anything they meant to tell us.

Archaeologists excavate in layers, because deeper almost always means older, and record exactly where every object was found: an object without its context has lost most of its information. Dating methods include radiocarbon for once-living material, thermoluminescence for fired pottery, and comparison of styles across sites.

The discipline is also a lesson in reasoning. Absence of evidence is weak evidence of absence โ€” organic material rots, so the lack of wooden objects at a site tells you about the soil as much as about the people. And what survives is biased towards the durable and the buried, which is why we know a great deal about pottery and tombs and far less about everyday clothing, food and conversation.

Worth knowing

  • The Archaeological Survey of India was founded in 1861 and still protects thousands of monuments.
  • Radiocarbon dating works up to roughly fifty thousand years; beyond that other methods are needed.
  • Taking an artefact home from a site destroys its context and is also, in India, an offence.
