Economist, jurist, chief architect of the Constitution's drafting, and the most forceful critic of caste India has produced.
Born in 1891 into a Mahar family and subjected to untouchability throughout his schooling, Ambedkar went on to doctorates at Columbia and the London School of Economics. He led the Mahad satyagraha for the right to drink from a public tank, argued the case of the depressed classes at the Round Table Conferences, and chaired the drafting committee of the Constitution.
His argument was that political democracy without social democracy would not hold โ that a country could not be one person one vote while remaining graded by birth in every other respect. In his final speech to the Constituent Assembly he warned of exactly that contradiction. In 1956 he converted to Buddhism with hundreds of thousands of followers. He died the same year.
