Who you are
🎯 Introduce yourself and say where you are from.
🗣️ Say these out loud
- నేను విద్యార్థిని — nenu vidyaarthini 🔊 NAY-noo vid-yaar-THI-ni I am a student. The Sanskrit word again — a Hindi speaker recognises it at once.
- నేను హైదరాబాద్లో ఉంటాను — nenu Hyderabad-lo untaanu 🔊 NAY-noo hai-da-raa-BAAD-lo oon-TAA-noo I live in Hyderabad. -లో -lo = in, glued to the end. Dravidian languages add endings rather than using separate words.
- నాకు తెలుగు వచ్చు — naaku Telugu vachchu 🔊 NAA-koo TE-lu-gu VACH-choo I know Telugu. Literally 'to me Telugu comes' — the same shape as Hindi मुझे आती है.
- కొంచెం కొంచెం — konchem konchem 🔊 KON-chem KON-chem a little, a little నాకు కొంచెం తెలుగు వచ్చు — the most useful sentence a beginner owns.
- మీరు ఎక్కడి నుంచి? — meeru ekkadi nunchi? 🔊 MEE-roo EK-ka-di NOON-chi Where are you from? ఎక్కడ ekkada = where; నుంచి = from.
- అర్థం కాలేదు — artham kaaledu 🔊 AR-tham KAA-le-du I did not understand. అర్థం artham = meaning, a Sanskrit word Telugu uses constantly.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 Telugu borrows nouns from Sanskrit and keeps its own grammar
About a third of formal Telugu vocabulary comes from Sanskrit, which helps a Hindi or Marathi speaker enormously with words. But the sentence structure is entirely Dravidian — endings glued on, verb last, no gender in the way Hindi has it.
- విద్యార్థి, పుస్తకం, ప్రశ్న, సమయం — all Sanskrit, all familiar
- But: ఇంటిలో = in the house, ఇంటినుంచి = from the house — endings, not separate words
- And the verb always comes last: నేను పుస్తకం చదువుతాను (I book read).
🌍 Among the people
Telugu has two states, two accents and one literature. Telangana Telugu and Andhra Telugu differ in everyday words, and both are correct — the state split in 2014 made the difference a matter of pride rather than dispute.
