🗣️ Say these out loud
- Roma in Italia est. 🔊 RO-ma in ee-TA-lee-ah est Rome is in Italy. Est = is. Latin usually puts the verb last, unlike English.
- Puella aquam portat. 🔊 poo-EL-la AK-wam POR-tat The girl carries the water. Portat = carries — the root of 'portable' and 'transport'. Aqua gives 'aquarium'.
- Magister discipulos docet. 🔊 ma-GIS-ter dis-KIP-oo-los DO-ket The teacher teaches the students. Discipulus → 'disciple'. Docet → 'doctor', one who teaches.
- Agricola terram amat. 🔊 a-GRI-ko-la TER-ram A-mat The farmer loves the land. Agricola → 'agriculture'. Terra → 'terrain', 'territory'.
- Veni, vidi, vici. 🔊 WEH-nee, WEE-dee, WEE-kee I came, I saw, I conquered. Caesar's report of a battle in 47 BC. Three words, three syllables each, no conjunctions — the most famous sentence in Latin.
- Carpe diem. 🔊 KAR-peh DEE-em Seize the day. From the poet Horace. Carpe is an order given to one person.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 The ending does the work that word order does in English
In English, 'the dog bites the man' and 'the man bites the dog' differ only by position. In Latin the ending of each noun says whether it is the doer or the done-to, so the words may stand in any order without confusion.
- Puella aquam portat = the girl carries the water
- Aquam puella portat = exactly the same meaning
- -a marks the doer (subject); -am marks the thing acted upon (object).
- This is why Latin poetry can put words anywhere and still be understood.
🌍 Among the people
Latin was the working language of educated Europe until about 1700 — Newton wrote the Principia in it. It was nobody's mother tongue and everybody's second language, which is exactly what English is today.
