What actually helps you learn

Decades of research point to a short list, and most of it is the opposite of what feels productive.

Retrieval practice โ€” closing the book and trying to recall โ€” beats rereading by a wide margin, in study after study. Spacing the same hours across several days beats cramming them into one. Mixing problem types in a session feels harder and works better than doing twenty of the same kind in a row, because real exams do not tell you which method to use. Explaining a topic aloud, to a person or an empty room, exposes the gaps that rereading hides.

What does not work well is also clear: highlighting, rereading, and long passive hours with the material open. They feel effective because the page becomes familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowledge. The uncomfortable feeling of struggling to recall something is not a sign the method is failing; it is the sign it is working.

Worth knowing

  • The forgetting curve is steepest in the first day, so one short review the next day is worth several later.
  • Sleep after studying improves retention measurably.
  • Phone notifications fragment attention badly, and the cost of switching back is larger than the interruption itself.
