Memory is not a recording. It is a reconstruction, strengthened by being used โ which is why testing yourself beats rereading.
Information arrives in a short-term store that holds only a few items for a few seconds. Rehearsal and meaning move some of it into long-term memory, where the limit is not capacity but retrieval โ getting it back out. Every time you recall something successfully, that path becomes easier to use again.
Two findings matter for anyone studying. Spacing: the same total hours spread over days beat the same hours in one sitting, by a wide margin. Retrieval practice: closing the book and trying to recall is far more effective than reading it again, even though rereading feels easier and more productive. The feeling of fluency while rereading is precisely the trap โ it is the familiarity of the page, not knowledge of the content.
