Moving charge makes a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field makes charge move. Nearly all the world's electricity comes out of that second sentence.
Every magnet has two poles, and they cannot be separated: cut a magnet in half and you get two smaller magnets, each with both. Like poles repel, unlike attract. The deep link is with electricity โ a current through a wire makes a magnetic field around it, and winding that wire into a coil concentrates the field into an electromagnet that can be switched off, which an ordinary magnet cannot.
Faraday found the reverse: move a magnet near a coil and a current appears in the coil. That single effect is how almost every power station on Earth generates electricity, whether the turbine is turned by steam, falling water or wind. A motor is the same arrangement run backwards โ current in, movement out.
