A medicine is a chemical with an intended effect and a list of unintended ones. Trials exist to find out whether the first outweighs the second.
Before a medicine reaches a pharmacy it is tested in stages: first for safety in small numbers, then for effect, then in large randomised controlled trials comparing it against existing treatment or a placebo. Randomisation and blinding exist because both patients and doctors unconsciously see improvement where they expect it โ the placebo effect is real and sizeable, which is exactly why it has to be controlled for.
Antibiotics deserve their own warning. They work against bacteria and do nothing against viruses, so taking them for a cold has no benefit and real cost: bacteria that survive partial courses are the ones that reproduce, and resistant infections are now a serious global problem. Finish a prescribed course, never take somebody else's, and never buy them to keep at home.
