Science in ancient and medieval India

Astronomy, mathematics, metallurgy, medicine and grammar โ€” a long record, best appreciated accurately rather than loudly.

Aryabhata calculated the length of the year closely and explained eclipses as shadows rather than omens. Brahmagupta set out rules for zero and negative numbers. Bhaskara II worked on equations and on the behaviour of quantities approaching zero. The Kerala school under Madhava, from the fourteenth century, developed infinite series for trigonometric functions, anticipating results later found in Europe. Panini's grammar of Sanskrit, far older, is a formal system of such precision that computer scientists still study its structure.

In medicine, the Charaka and Sushruta traditions describe diagnosis, diet, surgical instruments and procedures including reconstruction of the nose. In metallurgy, zinc distillation at Zawar and the Delhi iron pillar are concrete evidence of advanced practice. The honest way to teach this is with the dates and the sources, because the record is impressive enough without exaggeration โ€” and exaggeration is what gets it dismissed.

Worth knowing

  • The numerals used worldwide today developed in India and reached Europe through Arabic transmission.
  • Takshashila and Nalanda attracted students from across Asia, long before universities existed in Europe.
  • Claims that ancient texts contain modern technology are not supported by the texts; the genuine achievements are specific and documented.

Your own textbook โ†—Balbharati publishes the textbooks free to read online. Your chapter is the thing to check first โ€” an encyclopedia is a summary, and the syllabus is the syllabus. Archaeological Survey of India โ†—The body that excavates and protects the sites โ€” Harappa, the Ashokan pillars, the monuments themselves.
