Ramp Race
β¨ Adding one book under the ramp sends the same little car rolling right across the room.
π§° You need
- a stiff tray or a long piece of card
- a pile of books
- a toy car or a marble
- chalk or tape to mark the finish
- a smooth floor
π What you will see
The steeper the ramp, the faster the car leaves the bottom and the further it travels. Starting further up the same ramp also makes it go further. Letting go instead of pushing keeps every race fair.
π§ͺ Do it
- Rest one end of the tray on a single book to make a gentle ramp.
- Let the car go from the top without pushing it.
- Mark where it stops with chalk and measure the distance in handspans.
- Add one more book under the ramp and let the same car go from the same starting line.
- Mark and measure again.
- Repeat with three books and put the three marks in order.
π‘ Why it happens
A car high up on a ramp has a store of energy simply because it is high. As it rolls down, that store turns into movement, so a steeper ramp lets it build up more speed by the bottom. On the flat floor, rubbing between the wheels and the floor slowly takes the movement away until the car stops. Letting go without pushing means the only thing you have changed is the slope, which makes the test fair.
π Now try this
Keep the ramp at two books and race the car on smooth floor, then on a carpet, and measure both distances.
π€ Think about it
Does a heavier car always beat a lighter one down the same ramp?
π§ Ask the Acharya
