Pattern Train

✨ You can say which colour the twentieth cap will be without laying a single one of them down.

How it works

🧰 You need

  • bottle caps, buttons or coins in two or three colours
  • a long table or floor space
  • paper
  • a pencil

⚠️ Keep small caps and coins away from babies and toddlers.

👀 What you will see

Once the rule is clear, your friend can keep the line going forever. A hidden cap is easy to guess because the rule tells you what belongs there. The three-colour pattern takes more caps before it starts repeating.

🧪 Do it

  1. Lay caps in a repeating line, such as red, blue, red, blue.
  2. Ask a friend to add the next four caps without being told the rule.
  3. Write the pattern on paper as letters, like A B A B.
  4. Cover one cap in the middle and let your friend guess what is hidden.
  5. Make a harder pattern with three colours and read it out loud together.
  6. Work out what the twentieth cap in your pattern will be, then lay it out to check.

💡 Why it happens

A pattern is a rule that repeats, and once you can say the rule out loud you can predict any part of it. Writing the pattern as letters means you can share it without the caps, which is how mathematicians pass ideas to each other. Predicting the twentieth cap without laying out twenty is the very beginning of algebra. Patterns also let you check your work, because a cap in the wrong place stands out at once.
