Reggio Emilia
The child has a hundred languages — drawing, clay, movement, music, words — and school's task is to keep all of them alive. Learning is a collaboration between children, teachers and parents.

🕘 What a day looks like
Long projects that follow the children's own questions and may run for weeks. An atelier (art studio) and an atelierista work alongside the teachers. The environment is called 'the third teacher' and is deliberately beautiful.
🔍 How it assesses a child
Pedagogical documentation. Teachers photograph, transcribe conversations, keep drawings, and display them as panels and books. Documentation is not a record of what happened — it is used to decide what to do next, and to make the children's thinking visible to themselves and their parents.

⚠️ Fair criticisms
- It is an approach, not a method — it cannot simply be bought or copied
- Demands very skilled, well-supported teachers and good ratios
- Hard to run in a large class with few adults
- Little formal outcome research, by its own choice
🇮🇳 In India
A growing number of Indian preschools describe themselves as Reggio-inspired. The Reggio institutions are careful to say that no school outside Reggio Emilia can be certified as Reggio — 'Reggio-inspired' is the honest term.

- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.
- This page cannot diagnose anything. If something concerns you, take it to a paediatrician — early support is effective, and waiting to see is usually the more expensive choice.
- Any loss of skills a child already had — words, walking, social interest — should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
