🕘 What a day looks like
Built around 'plan–do–review': the child says what they intend to do, does it, then reflects with the group on what they did. Consistent daily routine, key developmental indicators guiding the adults.
🔍 How it assesses a child
The Child Observation Record (COR) — teachers write short, dated, factual anecdotes of what a child actually did and said, then place them against developmental indicators. Assessment is continuous and based on evidence, never on a test.
✅ What it does well
- The most rigorously evaluated early-years approach of all
- The Perry Preschool study followed children into their forties and found lasting effects on schooling, income and arrest rates
- Plan–do–review builds the ability to plan, which predicts later school success
- Observation records are concrete and defensible
⚠️ Fair criticisms
- The famous Perry study was small (123 children) and served a very disadvantaged group, so the size of the effect may not transfer
- Requires substantial teacher training
- Can feel procedural if the routine is followed without understanding
🇮🇳 In India
Used by some Indian preschool chains and by NGO early-years programmes; the plan–do–review routine transfers well even where the full model is not adopted.

- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.
- This page cannot diagnose anything. If something concerns you, take it to a paediatrician — early support is effective, and waiting to see is usually the more expensive choice.
- Any loss of skills a child already had — words, walking, social interest — should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
