Bank Street โ the developmental-interaction approach
Development and social experience are inseparable: children build understanding by acting on their real world and talking about it with others.
๐ถ How it sees the child
A whole person whose thinking and feelings cannot be separated.
๐ What a day looks like
Deep study of the immediate world โ the bakery, the bus route, the market โ through trips, block-building, dramatic play and discussion. Blocks are taken very seriously as a thinking material.
๐ How it assesses a child
Narrative records, work samples and portfolios, discussed in teacher teams. Assessment is used to plan teaching, not to rank children.
โ What it does well
- Strong social studies and community understanding
- Sophisticated work with blocks and dramatic play
- Takes teachers' professional judgment seriously
โ ๏ธ Fair criticisms
- Demands highly trained teachers
- Less prescriptive, so harder to implement at scale
- Little quantitative outcome research
๐ฎ๐ณ In India
Little used directly, but its emphasis on studying the child's own neighbourhood suits Indian classrooms very well.
โ๏ธ Please read this part
- The ages given are typical ranges, not deadlines. Children vary enormously, and most children who are 'late' for something are simply children.
- This page cannot diagnose anything. If something concerns you, take it to a paediatrician โ early support is effective, and waiting to see is usually the more expensive choice.
- Any loss of skills a child already had โ words, walking, social interest โ should be discussed with a doctor promptly, at any age.
- Have hearing and vision checked before school begins. A great many 'learning problems' in the early years turn out to be hearing or sight.
- A preschool that tests, ranks or gives homework to four-year-olds is not following any recognised system on this page, including India's own national framework.
