๐ฏ Why learn it
Sanskrit is the root system under half of India's languages: learn it and thousands of words in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati explain themselves. It is also the language of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Gita, of Kalidasa's poetry and of Panini's grammar โ the most precise description of any language written anywhere before the twentieth century.
๐ฑ How this course teaches
Sanskrit is usually taught as a wall of tables, and most students give up at the wall. This course does the opposite: you begin with verses you have already heard, understand them word by word, and meet the grammar only as the verses hand it to you. By lesson six you will be able to take apart a shloka you have known all your life.
๐ The sounds to get right first
| The five rows | เค เค เค เคค เคช | Sanskrit sounds are arranged by where the mouth makes them: throat, palate, roof, teeth, lips. This ordering is over 2,500 years old and is still how phonetics works. |

| เค | 'u' as in 'but' | Not 'ah'. เคฐเคพเคฎ is closer to 'Raam-a' with a very short final vowel. |
| เค | ri | A vowel made with the tongue curled: เคเคทเคฟ rishi, เคเฅเคทเฅเคฃ krishna. |
| Long and short | เค vs เค | Length changes meaning completely. Hold long vowels for two beats, short for one. |
| เคตเคฟเคธเคฐเฅเค เค | a breathed echo | เคฐเคพเคฎเค is 'Raamah' with a light echo of the vowel: 'Raama-ha'. |
| Recitation | โ | Sanskrit was preserved by sound long before it was written. Say everything aloud; a silently read Sanskrit is only half the language. |
