Time and wanting
🎯 Speak about yesterday and tomorrow, and ask for what you need.
🗣️ Say these out loud
- ગઈકાલે હું ગયો — gai kaale hun gayo 🔊 GUY KAA-lay hoon GA-yo Yesterday I went. (male) ગઈ gaye for a female. Gujarati separates ગઈકાલે (yesterday) from આવતીકાલે (tomorrow) — no ambiguity, unlike Hindi.
- આવતીકાલે હું જઈશ — aavti kaale hun jaish 🔊 AAV-tee KAA-lay hoon JAA-eesh Tomorrow I will go. -ઈશ is the future for હું.
- મારે પાણી જોઈએ છે — maare paani joiye chhe 🔊 MAA-ray PAA-nee JO-ee-yay chhay I want water. જોઈએ = is needed. મારે = for me.
- મારે જવું છે — maare javun chhe 🔊 MAA-ray JA-voon chhay I have to go / I want to go. The everyday way to state an intention.
- શું થયું? — shun thayun? 🔊 shoon THA-yoon What happened? થવું thavun = to happen.
- કંઈ વાંધો નહીં — kain vaandho nahin 🔊 kain VAAN-dho na-HEEN No objection — never mind. The Gujarati कोई बात नहीं.
Read every line aloud twice before moving on. The mouth learns a language, not the eye.
🔍 Wanting is something that is, not something you do
Gujarati says 'to me water is needed' rather than 'I want water'. The person takes -ને or મારે, and જોઈએ છે does the rest — it never changes for who is wanting.
- મારે પાણી જોઈએ છે = I want water
- તમારે શું જોઈએ છે? = what do you want?
- મને ભૂખ લાગી છે = I am hungry (hunger has struck me)
- The same shape as Hindi मुझे and Marathi मला — all three inherited it from the same source.
🌍 Among the people
Gandhi wrote સત્યના પ્રયોગો — The Story of My Experiments with Truth — in Gujarati, in short plain sentences he said any villager should understand. It is still one of the best books to read as a learner.
🔁 Practise today
- Say what you did yesterday and will do tomorrow, with the full words for each.
- Ask for five things with જોઈએ છે.
- Learn મને, તમને, તેને, અમને.
