🎯 Why learn it

Bengali carries Tagore, who wrote the national anthems of two countries, and the first Asian Nobel in literature. It is the language of Kolkata, of Bangladesh's entire public life, and of a literary tradition that runs unbroken for a thousand years.

🌱 How this course teaches

Bengali sounds different from the way it is written — অ is often said 'o', and many vowels soften. So this course leans on the ear first: hear the phrase, say it, and only then look at the script. That is exactly the order a Kolkata child meets it in.

🔊 The sounds to get right first

অ	o, not a	The inherent vowel is 'o'. কম is 'kom', not 'kam'. This single fact explains most mispronunciations by Hindi speakers.
স, শ, ষ	all 'sh'	Bengali merged three Sanskrit sibilants into one sound. সব is 'shob'.
ব and ভ	b and bh	ভালো bhalo (good) — the bh is breathed, like the bh in 'clubhouse'.
No 'v'	b instead	বিদ্যা is 'bidda'. Sanskrit v becomes b throughout.
Final vowels	often dropped	ভালো is written with a final vowel and said 'bhalo'; many words end in a consonant in speech.
